DT12450N Dome Failure Analysis: Contact Issues and Manufacturer's Recommended Solution

Client consultation:

1.The control panel developed by our company uses your DT12450N domes. During testing with the detection tooling, we found that some domes sheets have failure issues. The status of the green LED indicates the electrical connection status of the domes: the green LED being on means the dome's electrical connection is valid, and the green LED being off means the dome's electrical connection is invalid. A few domes in the video show failure; through observation, we found that when the dome is pressed, the short pin (the second tact switch contact) may lift up, causing the connection to be interrupted.
The DTSD12340N we used in the first version of the sample did not have this problem. The issue arose after we replaced DTSD12340N with DT12450N without changing other designs. We purchased 5,000 pieces of DT12450N in advance. If this problem cannot be solved, using this batch of domes will have a relatively large impact on our products. We would like to ask if you have a good solution. Thank you!

Manufacturer's Reply:

1.Here are some initial thoughts from the engineering team, we are happy to continue looking into this for you and are happy to set up a call as well if needed. My first thought would be to check the circuit to make sure that there is not solder mask present between the contact pads. Also it appears that they are only checking the contact of the middle of the dome, not the DT leg. Or is it that they are looking for both contacts to light up the LED? If that is the case, they should use the DTSD12450N for better short leg consistency.

2.We are developing a control panel and have purchased 5,000 pieces of DT12450N as production stock, with a small portion already used. As mentioned in our previous email, we found that some domes are malfunctioning during testing. We once consulted your sales manager, and the reply is as shown in the picture. It turns out that the occasional failure of the buttons on our control panel is indeed caused by the defects of DT12450N. Moreover, after multiple optimization designs on the control panel, we found that this problem still cannot be solved.
This issue will directly lead to the failure of product buttons and make the quality control of the products produced by our company unstable. Our request is to return this batch of DT12450N, or replace them with compatible domes of stable quality, such as DTSD12340N.
Your company is a manufacturing company pursuing excellence, and we believe you will not allow defective products to circulate in the market. We look forward to your reply.

2.After speaking with the engineering team they confirmed that yes the DTSD was created to maintain dual touch through the press.

Sounds like you are seeing the same results in your tests,

Let me know what you think, what else are you needing from our end? An order of the DTSD domes?
